Dhaka, Apr 09 (V7N) – The United Kingdom has deployed its armed forces to deter Russian submarine activity in British waters, Defence Secretary John Healy said on Thursday. Reuters reported that Russian submarines had been monitored and deterred for about a month earlier this year.
Healy said British forces, in coordination with allies including Norway, have been working to track and counter “malign activity” by Russian vessels. The operation was publicly disclosed to send a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that their activities are being closely watched.
He added that the Russian submarines had already left British waters heading north, with no evidence of damage to underwater cables or pipelines. “We are watching you. We are watching your activities on our cables and pipelines,” Healy warned, adding that any attempt to harm them will not be tolerated and will carry serious consequences.
The Defence Secretary noted that the Russian operation involved an Akula-class attack submarine along with two specialized submarines from the Main Directorate for Deep Sea Research (GUGI) in Moscow. He emphasized that Russian movements were under constant surveillance and their planned covert operation had been exposed.
