Barcelona, Jan 21 (V7N) — A passenger train derailed near Barcelona following heavy rainfall, killing the train driver and injuring at least 37 passengers, British media outlet BBC News reported on Wednesday (January 21).
According to Spanish authorities, torrential rains affected several regions of Spain on Tuesday (January 20), causing a containment wall to collapse onto a railway line near Barcelona. The train struck the collapsed structure and subsequently derailed.
The driver was killed at the scene. Emergency response teams rushed to the area and rescued the injured passengers, who were later transported to nearby hospitals. Officials said that five of the injured remain in critical condition.
This incident comes just two days after another deadly train accident in Spain. On Sunday (January 18), a train traveling from Malaga to Madrid derailed and collided with another train on an adjacent track, killing at least 42 people.
The back-to-back rail accidents have raised serious concerns over railway safety and infrastructure resilience, particularly amid extreme weather conditions. Authorities have launched investigations into both incidents.
