Amsterdam, Sep 25 (V7N)- Cody Gakpo scored in stoppage time as the Netherlands rescued a 1-1 draw against Germany in their UEFA Nations League opener on Thursday, denying Jürgen Klopp a winning start as Germany coach.
The match at the Johan Cruyff Arena also marked Xavi Hernández’s first competitive game in charge of the Netherlands. Both teams had entered the tournament under new coaches.
The Netherlands dominated possession and created several opportunities, but Germany goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen produced a series of important saves to keep the hosts from scoring.
Germany took the lead in the 32nd minute. Felix Nmecha converted from close range after Karim Adeyemi’s effort was blocked, giving Klopp’s side a 1-0 advantage.
The Netherlands continued to press after the break, with Denzel Dumfries and substitute Mexx Meerdink among those creating chances. Ter Stegen repeatedly denied the Dutch attack, while some opportunities were also missed.
The hosts finally found the breakthrough in the second minute of stoppage time. Substitute Ruben van Bommel delivered a superb cross from the left, and Gakpo met it with a first-time volley to make it 1-1.
The Netherlands pushed for a winner in the final moments, but Germany held on as the match ended in a draw.
