Miami, Aug 06 (V7N)- Inter Miami maintained their unbeaten run in the Leagues Cup despite facing heavy rain and severe thunderstorms, defeating Mexican club Atletico San Luis 4-2 at the DRV PNK Stadium on Wednesday.
Lionel Messi, making his second appearance for Inter Miami and his first start since the team’s defeat to Spain in the World Cup final, delivered a brilliant performance. The 39-year-old Argentine captain scored two goals and provided an assist to guide Miami to victory.
With his brace, Messi became the all-time leading scorer in the four-year history of the Leagues Cup, surpassing Los Angeles FC’s Denis Bouanga. Messi now has 14 goals in 12 matches in the competition.
Miami had a difficult start as Atletico San Luis took the lead just four minutes into the match through a powerful header from David Rodriguez.
However, Messi quickly responded. In the 11th minute, he converted a corner opportunity after controlling a long pass from young defender Noah Allen to level the score at 1-1.
Inter Miami then moved ahead 2-1 through Telasco Segovia before Messi doubled his tally in the 44th minute. Receiving another assist from Allen, Messi entered the box and calmly finished to extend Miami’s advantage.
Just before halftime, defender Mikel headed in Messi’s corner kick during stoppage time, giving Inter Miami a commanding 4-1 lead.
The second half was delayed for around 30 minutes due to heavy rain and lightning. After play resumed, Rafa Llorente scored for Atletico San Luis to reduce the deficit to 4-2, but Miami held on to secure the victory.
Young defender Noah Allen was also one of the standout performers, providing three assists during the match.
Meanwhile, Inter Miami played without Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez, who was suspended for six matches following a confrontation and alleged misconduct involving opposition staff during last year’s Leagues Cup final against Seattle Sounders. As a result, Suarez will miss the remainder of this year’s tournament.
