Atlanta, July 2 (V7N) – Harry Kane scored twice as England staged a dramatic comeback to defeat DR Congo 2-1 and book their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 on Tuesday.
The Three Lions recovered from an early setback at Atlanta Stadium, with captain Kane once again proving why he remains England's most dependable figure in crucial moments.
England endured a nightmare start when Brian Sipenga stunned the crowd by putting DR Congo ahead in the seventh minute. The early goal unsettled England's defence and midfield, while the Congolese side defended resolutely throughout the first half.
Despite sustained pressure, England struggled to find an equaliser before the break. Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford and several others tested goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi, who produced a string of outstanding saves to preserve Congo's 1-0 lead at halftime.
Facing elimination, England manager Thomas Tuchel reshuffled his side after the interval, introducing Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon in search of a breakthrough.
The changes paid off in the 75th minute when Gordon delivered a pinpoint cross for Kane, who headed home to level the score and breathe new life into England's campaign.
With momentum firmly on England's side, Kane completed the turnaround in the 86th minute. Receiving the ball just outside the penalty area, the England captain created space with a quick turn before unleashing a powerful strike into the top corner to seal a 2-1 victory.
The goal was Kane's 13th in FIFA World Cup history and secured England's place in the knockout stage.
Kane also equalled Sir Geoff Hurst's record of four World Cup knockout goals for England. Only Gary Lineker, with six, has scored more for the Three Lions in World Cup knockout matches.
Although DR Congo bowed out in heartbreaking fashion, the African side earned widespread praise for a spirited and disciplined performance that pushed one of the tournament favourites to the limit.
