Los Angeles, Jun 28 (V7N) – Defending champions Argentina maintained their unbeaten record in the group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a convincing 3-1 victory over Jordan on Sunday, securing top spot in Group J and advancing to the Round of 32.

Lionel Scaloni's side controlled the match from the opening whistle, producing another dominant display to finish the group stage with maximum points.

Argentina made a bright start and took the lead in the 19th minute when midfielder Giovani Lo Celso curled a magnificent free-kick beyond the Jordanian goalkeeper.

The Albiceleste doubled their advantage in the 30th minute after Julián Álvarez was brought down inside the penalty area. Lautaro Martínez confidently converted the resulting penalty to give the reigning world champions a comfortable 2-0 lead before halftime.

Jordan responded positively after the break and reduced the deficit through star forward Mousa Al-Tamari, who capitalised on a defensive lapse to finish a swift counterattack and make it 2-1.

The goal briefly raised hopes of a Jordanian comeback, but Argentina captain Lionel Messi ensured there would be no late drama.

Introduced from the bench in the second half, the 39-year-old superstar produced another moment of brilliance in the 80th minute. Awarded a free-kick just outside the penalty area, Messi curled a trademark effort into the net to restore Argentina's two-goal cushion and seal a 3-1 victory.

The strike was Messi's sixth goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and further underlined his importance as Argentina prepare for the knockout rounds.

With the victory, Argentina completed the group stage unbeaten and will now face Cape Verde in the Round of 32 as they continue their bid to successfully defend the World Cup title.
