New York, Jun 28 (V7N) – England secured top spot in Group L of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a convincing 2-0 victory over Panama in their final group-stage match on Saturday, overcoming a frustrating first-half display with an improved performance after the break.
The match was played at New York–New Jersey Stadium in the United States.
England struggled to find a breakthrough during the opening 45 minutes as Panama's disciplined defense frustrated Thomas Tuchel's side. At the same time, Croatia temporarily moved to the top of the group by taking the lead against Ghana in the other Group L fixture.
The Three Lions, however, returned from halftime with greater urgency and eventually broke the deadlock through Jude Bellingham before captain Harry Kane added a second goal to seal the victory.
The 2-0 win ensured England finished as Group L champions and advanced to the Round of 32.
England will face either Senegal or the Democratic Republic of Congo in the knockout stage. If they progress to the Round of 16, a potential meeting with Mexico or Ecuador could await.
Meanwhile, group runners-up Croatia will take on either Colombia or Portugal in the Round of 32 as they continue their campaign in the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup.
