Zurich, May 07 (V7N) — World football governing body FIFA has upheld a suspension imposed on Argentine youngster Gianluca Prestianni over allegations of homophobic abuse during a recent Champions League match.
The decision, announced on Wednesday (May 6), confirms a six-match ban originally handed down by UEFA, with three matches suspended.
The incident reportedly occurred during a UEFA Champions League match involving Prestianni’s club Benfica and Real Madrid. Prestianni was accused of directing homophobic abuse toward Brazilian star Vinícius Júnior during the game.
According to reports, the winger allegedly covered part of his face with his jersey while making the remarks. UEFA later ruled that the behavior violated its disciplinary regulations.
FIFA stated that UEFA’s sanction will also apply to international football competitions, potentially affecting Prestianni’s availability for Argentina national football team during the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
The ruling has created uncertainty regarding the player’s participation in Argentina’s opening World Cup fixtures.
