Dhaka, June 15 (V7N) — The much-anticipated new edition of the Club World Cup began with a goalless draw as Inter Miami and Egyptian club Al Ahly failed to find the net in their opening match at Hard Rock Stadium, Florida, on Sunday morning (June 15).
Despite some delays to the opening ceremony, the game kicked off at 6 am Bangladesh time. Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami dominated possession with 56 percent and took 9 shots, but only 4 were on target. Al Ahly, with 44 percent possession, surprisingly outshot Miami with 11 attempts, 8 of which tested the goalkeeper.
Al Ahly came close to taking the lead late in the first half when winger Trzegate missed a crucial penalty in the 43rd minute. Both teams launched several attacks, but resolute defenses kept the scoreline at 0-0.
Inter Miami and Al Ahly are placed in Group A alongside Portuguese giants FC Porto and Brazilian powerhouse Palmeiras. Messi and Inter Miami will face FC Porto next on June 19.
This year’s tournament features 32 teams from six continents, split into eight groups of four. The top two from each group will progress to the round of 16, marking a major expansion from previous editions, which were limited to continental champions. The revamped Club World Cup promises a larger, more competitive global showcase for club football.
