Nov 19 (V7N) - Cameron Smith, the 2022 British Open champion, is determined to secure his first victory of 2024 at this week's Australian PGA Championship in his hometown of Brisbane. The tournament, hosted at Royal Queensland Golf Club, is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour and marks the opening event of the European circuit's 2025 global schedule.
Smith, a member of Royal Queensland, faces added pressure to maintain his streak of winning at least one tournament every year since 2020. He’s keen to capitalize on his recent form, which includes a second-place finish at the New South Wales Open and a tied third at the Queensland PGA Championship.
Joining Smith in the field are former world No. 1 Jason Day, defending champion Min Woo Lee, and in-form Lucas Herbert, adding depth to the competition.
Smith’s 2024 campaign has been marked by near-misses, including three runner-up finishes on the LIV Golf circuit and a sixth-place tie at the Masters. He is eager to atone for last year’s disappointing Australian PGA outing, where he missed the cut after a shocking second round.
"I’ve done all the prep, particularly over the last month, to really be competitive," Smith said. "I want to be in contention on Sunday."
Following the Australian PGA, Smith is set to compete in the Australian Open in Melbourne and the Asian Tour's Saudi International in December.
