Nov 18, (V7N) - New Zealand flanker Samipeni Finau has been ruled out of the All Blacks' clash against Italy in Turin on Saturday after failing a concussion test following a head-knock during the 30-29 loss to France, head coach Scott Robertson confirmed. Finau was replaced early in the match by Peter Lakai, who impressed by scoring a try in just his second test.

In addition to Finau's absence, centre Jordie Barrett is awaiting a scan for a knee injury sustained in the same game. His availability for the Italy match remains uncertain. On a positive note, flanker Sam Cane has been cleared to return after recovering from a head-knock suffered during the All Blacks' win over Ireland. Cane required stitches for a deep gash on his forehead but is now fit to play.

Robertson emphasized the importance of maintaining continuity and cohesion within the team, especially with the integration of new players this year. "This year’s been a great year for us to play 12 debutants, give them game time, get them in, get good combinations, and get a bit of cohesion going. And this week will be no different," he said.

The All Blacks are looking to bounce back from the loss to France, which snapped their five-match winning streak. The streak included victories over Australia, Japan, England, Ireland, and success in the Rugby Championship.

The France match sparked reflection, particularly regarding a late-game decision by captain Scott Barrett. Trailing 30-26 with six minutes left, Barrett opted for a Damian McKenzie penalty kick instead of kicking for touch to set up a try-scoring opportunity. McKenzie’s kick brought New Zealand within one point, but they were unable to score again before the final whistle.

Robertson revealed that a message had been relayed to Barrett from the coaching staff but declined to disclose its content. He supported his captain's decision, saying, "You’ve got to support him. That’s the first thing. He’s your captain, you trust him. He went on instinct at the time. Now he’s had a bit of time to reflect. In test footy, opportunities are quite limited, and he felt like he might have got another one to win it, but we didn’t get that."

The All Blacks will aim to regroup and deliver a strong performance against Italy as they continue their northern hemisphere tour.
