LIMA, April 13 (V7N) – Peru's electoral authority announced that it will reopen some polling stations on Monday after logistical failures prevented tens of thousands of voters from casting their ballots during the country's presidential and legislative elections on Sunday.
The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) revealed that more than a dozen polling stations were closed on election day due to issues such as the lack of ballots, ballot boxes, and other essential voting materials. As a result, approximately 63,000 citizens were unable to vote.
Amid growing claims of election fraud and concerns over voter disenfranchisement, ONPE confirmed that the extension would be implemented to safeguard citizens' right to vote.
Yessica Elisa Clavijo Chipoco, General Secretary of the National Elections Board, stated that some polling centers would remain open until 6:00 PM on Monday to allow voters who missed the opportunity on April 12 to cast their ballots. However, the electoral authority did not specify the exact number of stations to be reopened, only that they would focus on those where citizens were unable to vote the previous day.
The decision to extend voting hours comes as Peru's electoral system faces scrutiny over the disruptions that have already marred the election process.
