Kolkata, May 17 (V7N) – Former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has expressed surprise over Virat Kohli’s sudden retirement from Test cricket, calling it an unexpected development. He also urged selectors to proceed with caution in choosing the next Test captain, especially after the potential departure of both Rohit Sharma and Kohli from the red-ball format.

Speaking to India Today, Ganguly remarked, “It’s their personal decision. Can anyone be forced to stop playing? Virat's career has been exceptional. The same goes for Rohit. But yes, Kohli’s retirement has definitely surprised me.”

Meanwhile, discussions around the venue of the IPL final have intensified amid speculation that rain may force a shift from Eden Gardens in Kolkata to Ahmedabad. Fans of Kolkata have expressed discontent following reports that the final might be relocated.

While the BCCI has yet to officially announce the venues for the play-offs and final, Ganguly remains hopeful. “We are trying to host the final at Eden. I am in communication with the board. Can the final be moved so easily? Protesting may not change much. CAB shares an excellent relationship with the board,” Ganguly stated.

He acknowledged that Eden Gardens has not been listed in the new IPL schedule due to the completion of league matches in Kolkata but added, “I’m optimistic the play-offs will be held at Eden. I believe all issues will be resolved soon.”

The IPL resumed on Saturday (May 17) after being temporarily suspended due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan over the Pahelgam dispute. With the situation stabilizing, the league has resumed, and the cricketing world is once again buzzing with excitement.
