Dhaka, Jun 16 (V7N)- Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has said that the opposition is not acting merely for confrontation, but for the welfare of the public, adding that a more active and strong opposition role is being observed in the current parliament.

He made the remarks on Tuesday during a briefing with journalists at the LD building of the National Parliament of Bangladesh.

The Jamaat leader said that after 2008, there was effectively no strong opposition in parliament, and in many cases the ruling party itself had to play both government and opposition roles. He added that the current parliament is once again witnessing the emergence of a more active opposition presence, which is participating in debates on public interest issues.

He further noted that past parliamentary sessions often saw heated exchanges between government and opposition members, including incidents of disruption and walkouts. He emphasized that parliamentary sessions involve significant public expenditure, and therefore lawmakers must prioritize the welfare of citizens in their discussions.

“We are not an opposition for the sake of opposition, but an opposition for public welfare,” he said, adding that the party aims to remain a rational and constructive opposition force in parliament.

Commenting on the national budget process, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman also suggested that announcing the budget in June leads to financial inefficiencies, arguing that presenting it earlier, such as in January, could help reduce waste. He said the opposition will continue to strongly raise this issue in parliament.
