Dhaka, Feb 19 (V7N) — National Citizens Party (NCP) convener and opposition chief whip Nahid Islam has criticized the newly formed cabinet of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, alleging that it fails to reflect the people’s aspirations for reform.

Speaking at a press conference at the NCP’s temporary office in Bangla Motor on Thursday afternoon, Nahid acknowledged the February 12 elections, saying they were held after the sacrifice of thousands of martyrs. However, he claimed that the results were rigged, despite the voting process being fair.

Key Points from Nahid Islam’s Remarks

  • Nahid stated that the NCP accepted the election results for the sake of national stability, but expressed disappointment with the new cabinet, calling it a continuation of the old arrangement rather than a representative government.

  • He criticized the BNP for not taking the oath as members of the Constitution Reform Council, saying the popular vote from the referendum was disregarded.

  • On corruption, Nahid questioned the sincerity of BNP’s promises, asking, “When will BNP MPs repay their loans?” He added that discussions on anti-corruption measures should come only after financial accountability.

  • Nahid also pointed out the presence of loan defaulters and accused individuals in the new cabinet, saying the people expected a transparent cabinet following the parliamentary elections after the July coup, but this expectation has not been met.

The opposition leader’s comments underline ongoing concerns about government transparency, reform, and accountability in the early days of the new administration.
