Dhaka, Oct 29 (V7N)- BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the recommendations made by the National Consensus Commission will deepen divisions instead of fostering unity. He also expressed disappointment over the roles played by both the interim government and the commission.
He made these remarks at a discussion meeting titled “Democratic Bangladesh” held in Gulshan, Dhaka, on Wednesday (October 29) morning.
Salahuddin Ahmed said that the Representation of the People Order (RPO) has been passed by incorporating one of the commission’s “undisputed” provisions on electoral reforms, and it is now awaiting ordinance approval. “Previously, any political party within an alliance had the option to contest under the alliance symbol or its own. But now, they have suddenly declared — in an undemocratic way — that even if a party is in an alliance, it must contest under its own symbol,” he said, adding that “one political party is supporting this move.”
He further stated that BNP wants the interim government to act as a true caretaker government, maintaining impartiality to restore public confidence.
Criticizing the commission’s actions, Salahuddin said, “We once believed the Consensus Commission was acting as a neutral referee. But it now seems that the commission, the government, and a few other parties are playing together on one side, while BNP is left to fight alone for the nation.”
He also remarked that the document recently released by the commission “does not contain the authentic signed version of the charter.”
