Dhaka, Oct 23 (V7N) — BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that while a political party is seeking an opportunity to sign the July Charter, party interests should not take precedence over national interests.

He made the remarks at a discussion titled “July 24 Mass Uprising: Education and Employment in the Youth's Thoughts”, organized by UTAB at the National Press Club on Thursday (October 23).

Salahuddin Ahmed noted that the party has raised demands about implementing the charter through a special constitutional order. “According to the constitution, the head of government does not have the authority to issue such an order. This jurisdiction lies solely with the President,” he said.

He described the proposal for the Chief Advisor to issue a constitutional order as emotional, emphasizing that the government can only issue a notification. “The state does not operate on emotions. Still, BNP welcomes the proposal,” he added.

On the issue of a referendum, Salahuddin Ahmed said that BNP itself proposed it. While discussions have included holding a referendum on the election day, all but two political parties have agreed to this proposal.

The BNP leader also highlighted the importance of mindset changes alongside economic and structural reforms. “Along with other reforms, mental reforms are needed. Otherwise, reforms cannot become reality,” he said.
