Dhaka, Oct 16 (V7N) — Jamaat-e-Islami has confirmed it will participate in the July Charter signing ceremony, but the party has not yet decided to officially sign the charter, said Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar.
He made the remarks during a seminar on the “Legal Basis of July National Charter, Referendum, and PR Method of Election” at the Diploma Engineers Institute in Dhaka on Thursday.
Parwar cautioned that holding a referendum alongside national elections could lead to chaos and suggested November as the proper time for the referendum. He also demanded that all proposals of the Consensus Commission be included in the referendum. Parwar further alleged that certain government officials are being transferred and replaced under the influence of a political party.
Meanwhile, Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad raised concerns about the legal foundation of the July Charter, stating that it must be established through a referendum. He warned that if the referendum is blocked at this stage, the BNP could face a situation similar to what the Awami League experienced.
Jamaat’s stance reflects ongoing political uncertainty around the implementation and legal recognition of the July Charter.
