Dhaka, Sep 25 (V7N) – BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has warned that introducing a proportional representation (PR) system in Bangladesh’s elections could lead to another “fascist or weak government” similar to that of Sheikh Hasina’s era, ultimately leaving the country in permanent instability.
He made the remarks while addressing a discussion meeting at the Supreme Court on Thursday afternoon.
Salahuddin argued that the push for PR has two objectives: “One is to gain more seats artificially, and the other is to create disunity and instability so that no majority party can come to power.” He added that such a system benefits “less popular parties” rather than reflecting people’s genuine mandate.
“The constitution clearly specifies the method of voting—direct voting to elect people’s representatives,” the BNP leader said, urging Jamaat-e-Islami to consult the constitution before making demands.
Salahuddin further stated: “The nation cannot be put in danger by accepting unconstitutional, unpolitical, and illegal demands of any political party. This is a constitutional government, and it must act by maintaining constitutional continuity.”
Citing a recent survey, he noted that 56 percent of people do not even understand what PR is, yet Jamaat claims that 70 percent support it. “People cannot be misled with such claims,” he cautioned.
