Dhaka, Sep 13 (V7N) – BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed emphasized that despite strategic differences among political parties, anti-fascist national unity is essential to safeguard Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.
He made the remarks at a roundtable discussion on “The Future of Democratic Bangladesh: People’s Thoughts and Expectations” held in Dhaka on Saturday.
Salahuddin highlighted the need to transform the culture of democratic politics in line with the mass uprising’s expectations and called for efforts to eradicate the fascist political subculture. He noted that while parties may have different objectives, the establishment of an elected government, a functional parliament, and a tolerant political culture are necessary steps toward a true democracy.
At the same event, Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Professor Ali Riaz explained that the commission’s proposed reforms were based on civil society input, though some parties present them differently. Commission member Badiul Alam Majumder added that student-teacher-worker politics should not be based on laziness, and political parties must act with goodwill to make meaningful reforms.
