Dhaka, Aug 24 (V7N) – Tensions flared during the Election Commission’s hearing on claims and objections regarding parliamentary constituency boundaries, as a scuffle broke out between BNP leader Rumin Farhana’s group and NCP joint chief organizer Ataullah.
The hearing began at 12 noon on Sunday (August 24) at the Election Building in Dhaka. Constituencies discussed on the first day included Brahmanbaria-2 and Brahmanbaria-3. At one point, individuals from both constituencies became agitated, leading to arguments and physical altercations before EC officials restored order.
During the hearing, Barrister Rumin Farhana presented arguments supporting the draft published by the EC, while other participants opposed the draft. Those against the draft argued that three unions from Bijoynagar Upazila – Budhasti, Chandua, and Harashpur – had been added to Brahmanbaria-2, and demanded that the upazila remain intact.
Commenting on the incident, Farhana said:
“It is a sad incident; a fight has taken place. I thought no one from Brahmanbaria-3 would enter the EC with a goon. This does not go with the image, honor, and dignity of the commission. I support the EC’s decision and hope it remains. I did not want to bring any goons or scoundrels. What has not happened in 15 years has happened today. The BNP leaders for whom I fought are now pushing.”
Meanwhile, NCP joint chief organizer Ataullah alleged that Farhana did not allow the opposing side to speak, which triggered the uproar.
The EC is hearing claims and objections from the Comilla region on the first day, with proceedings scheduled to continue until next Wednesday.
