Dhaka, Aug 06 (V7N) – Jamaat-e-Islami has called for the 13th National Parliament elections to be held in accordance with the July Charter, while expressing concerns over the current political environment. The party stated that the necessary conditions for a fair and inclusive election have yet to be established.
The party’s Nayeb Ameer, Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, made these remarks during a press conference held in the capital on Wednesday (August 6).
Dr. Taher criticized the July Declaration presented by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus on Tuesday, saying, “The hopes and aspirations of the people have not been fully reflected in the declaration. It is incomplete and lacks clarity on its implementation.”
He further stated that the timeline for elections, as outlined in the declaration, must align with the framework of the July Charter, and added that allowing the implementation of the Charter to depend on a future elected government would go against the people's expectations.
Jamaat also voiced disappointment in its initial reaction to the July Declaration, emphasizing the need for more specific commitments. Dr. Taher noted, “The government must first ensure a level playing field and a free environment before moving toward elections.”
On Tuesday evening (August 5), Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus publicly announced the July Declaration in front of the National Assembly, joined by leaders from various political parties. In a subsequent address to the nation at 8 PM, he signaled that the next national elections would be held before Ramadan in February 2026.
