Dhaka, Aug 05 (V7N) – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir took to social media on Tuesday (August 5) to share an emotional reflection on the events of August 5 last year, recalling a poignant phone call with his daughter and describing the day as a turning point in Bangladesh’s political history.
In a verified Facebook post, Fakhrul recounted the deep fear and uncertainty that surrounded the July Movement, as well as the eventual triumph over what he termed as tyranny.
“I called my daughter in the morning. My heart broke when I heard her voice,” Fakhrul wrote. “Exactly one year ago today, she had called me. She is not only my daughter, but also the reflection of thousands of expatriate children—waiting, worried, and trembling with fear.”
He recalled the helplessness of that time, when phone lines were dead and communication was cut off, leaving families in the dark. “We could not sleep for many nights,” he added.
Sharing a particularly emotional memory, Fakhrul said, “She asked, ‘What is happening?’ I could not explain. I just said—InshaAllah, I will win.”
The BNP leader emphasized that the trauma was not limited to those inside the country. “The pain of those outside was no less—night vigils, tears, and fear. But there was also unshakable faith that injustice would eventually fall.”
Fakhrul described August 5, 2024—the day Sheikh Hasina fled the country—as a historic moment. “It is not just a date; it is the moment history changed,” he wrote. “The result of many years of democratic struggle, the sacrifices of thousands of martyrs and warriors.”
He expressed deep gratitude to all who contributed to the movement both at home and abroad. “We are eternally indebted—to the martyrs and warriors of July 2024 and the past 15 years. I thank everyone who stood up for the truth.”
Ending on a note of caution and responsibility, Fakhrul added: “Achieving freedom is also a responsibility. What we need now is to protect this achievement—with wisdom, restraint, and courage.”
