Sylhet, July 07 (V7N) — BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed hope that an interim government will organize the next national elections by February next year.

He made the remarks while speaking to reporters after visiting the shrine of Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) in Sylhet on Monday morning.

Mirza Fakhrul said that a preliminary discussion on holding elections in February had already taken place during a meeting between BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus in London. “The country will get on the right track through the elections in February, and the hopes and aspirations of the people will be reflected,” he added, emphasizing that only a fair and acceptable election could ensure Bangladesh’s progress in the right direction.

The BNP leader also called for united efforts to implement the new path shown by the recent student-public movement, particularly referencing the bloody student uprising in July.

He further claimed that around six million BNP leaders and activists have been implicated in false cases and that many lives have been lost as a result of ongoing political repression.

Mirza Fakhrul arrived at Sylhet Osmani International Airport at around 9:25 AM, accompanied by senior BNP leaders including Mirza Abbas, Dr. AZM Zahid Hossain, Iqbal Mahmud Tuku, Advocate Nipun Roy Chowdhury, Shama Obaid, Khairul Kabir Khokon, and others.

As part of his Sylhet visit, Mirza Fakhrul is scheduled to attend a Milad Mahfil at Sunrise Community Center in Pathantula to pray for the recovery of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. He will also be the chief guest at a reception for families of those killed during the July-August movement, to be held at Hotel Star Pacific in the Dargah Gate area.
