DHAKA,May 13,(V7N)– Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam today underscored the importance of avoiding lethal weapons during law enforcement operations, assuring the public that the police force will not transform into a "killer force."

The IGP made these remarks while addressing journalists following the prize distribution ceremony of the IGP Cup Cricket Tournament final, held at the Police Staff College ground in Mirpur, Dhaka.

"We will avoid weapons that cause certain death, like rifles that fire lethal bullets," stated the police chief in response to media queries. "However, we will finalise this through consultations. But in principle, we believe that the police cannot be a killer force," the IGP firmly added.

Emphasizing the necessity of non-lethal weapons for routine policing duties, IGP Alam suggested, "At most, I might carry a shotgun — that’s a reasonable public expectation, isn’t it?"

He acknowledged that exceptional circumstances, such as insurgencies or potential revolts in specific zones, might necessitate different measures. "But normally, while maintaining law and order, we will try to avoid lethal weapons and use non-lethal ones, which are widely accepted globally," he clarified.

The event was also attended by BCB President Faruque Ahmed and other senior police officials. Earlier in the program, the IGP presented trophies to the champion and runner-up teams of the cricket tournament.
