Sylhet, Nov 16 (V7N) – After meeting with protesting students, Vice-Chancellor of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), Dr. A.M. Sarwar Chowdhury, announced that the Central Student Union (SUCSU) elections will be held as previously scheduled on December 17. The roadmap for the election is set to be officially released on Sunday.
The meeting, held at 10 p.m. on Saturday, addressed students’ demands for an earlier election date between December 8–10. Dr. Chowdhury stated that while some students requested the earlier schedule, additional time is required for the Election Commission to complete preparations. Despite the announcement, it is reported that the protesting students remain dissatisfied with the election date.
The meeting was attended by Treasurer Dr. Ismail Hossain, Registrar Syed Salim Mohammad Abdul Qadir, and Hall Provost Dr. Mohammad Selim, along with student leaders from Bangladesh Chhatra League, Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, and former anti-discrimination student movements.
Treasurer Dr. Ismail Hossain explained that several critical tasks remain, including finalizing the voter list, publishing candidate lists, and preparing OMR sheets for voting. The technical team of the Election Commission confirmed that they will not be ready for an election by December 8 and completing the preparations before the originally requested dates is not feasible.
Dr. Chowdhury emphasized that the university administration is not opposed to any student demands; however, adequate time must be provided for the Election Commission to ensure a fair and organized election. Students have been advised to plan subsequent activities while keeping December 17 as the target election date, although concerns over the timing remain.
The Vice-Chancellor assured that the elections will be conducted in a festive and peaceful atmosphere, aiming to uphold transparency and student participation.
