Dhaka, Nov 16 (V7N) – Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed has commented on the misunderstandings that arose during the protests by officials and staff against the proposed bifurcation of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), assuring that efforts will be made to resolve the issues as much as possible.
Dr. Ahmed made the remarks while delivering the keynote speech at an event held on Saturday at the China-Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre in Agargaon, Dhaka. The event was organized to celebrate the annual sports competition and cultural program of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Taxation) Association. NBR Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan and Member G. M. Abul Kalam Kaykobad attended as special guests, while the Association’s President and NBR Member Motasim Billah Faruki presided over the program.
Addressing the event, Dr. Ahmed said that the government exercised patience for two months during the protests. While there were various complaints regarding different officials, most were not approached with negative assumptions. He emphasized that consideration was given to the fact that these officials’ livelihoods depend on their jobs. Nonetheless, he said positive reflection would be made on the events that occurred, noting that a healthy work environment is crucial to maintain employee motivation.
Earlier this year, during May and June, NBR officials staged continuous work stoppages and a complete shutdown for two months in response to the proposed division of the board. Several officials were temporarily suspended as a result of the protests. According to NBR sources, discussions are ongoing among officials to grant general amnesty to those who were not actively involved in the agitation but were suspended.
Dr. Ahmed also addressed criticism directed at him following the NBR protests. He stated that he harbors no resentment toward NBR officials, though he acknowledged that many wrote posts about him on social media. He clarified that he does not read these posts as he does not have a personal Facebook account, but relatives abroad inform him of the content, which he might find unacceptable.
The Finance Adviser further urged tax officials to ensure fairness in revenue collection. He emphasized that taxpayers should be treated politely and that taxes should never be collected through unfair practices. While efficiency in VAT and tax collection is important, Dr. Ahmed stressed that integrity and transparency are paramount. He warned that businesspeople will always attempt to evade taxes, which must be addressed with both skill and honesty.
This statement underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining a professional and transparent tax administration while addressing past internal conflicts within the NBR.
