Jhalokathi, July 20 (V7N) – Seven students were injured when a portion of the ceiling plaster and a structural beam collapsed during an exam at Mathbari Mohammadia Dakhil Madrasa in Rajapur upazila on Sunday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 AM while ninth and tenth-grade students were taking their midterm examinations.

According to Mostafizur Rahman, a teacher on duty during the exam, parts of the ceiling plaster from multiple areas suddenly fell on the students, causing panic and minor injuries. The injured students received immediate first aid, and the examination was later resumed in a safer nearby classroom.

Following the incident, panic spread among students, prompting many anxious parents to rush to the madrasa to check on their children. Local sources reported that the madrasa, established in 1984, currently serves more than 500 students. The affected single-story, three-room building was constructed during the 1993–94 fiscal year and has since been used as classroom space without major renovation.

Over the years, the building has deteriorated significantly. Cracks have developed across the roof, support pillars have weakened, and plaster continues to fall from the ceiling. According to the madrasa authorities, there have been previous incidents of partial ceiling and beam collapses, but no long-term solution has been implemented.

Md. A. Mannan, the madrasa superintendent, stated that they have repeatedly informed relevant authorities, including the Education Engineering Department (EED). “Officials from the EED visited and declared the building unsafe for use, recommending the suspension of all academic activities within the structure. Yet, no remedial measures have been taken,” he said.

He added, “It is deeply unfortunate that young students have been injured due to negligence. We urgently demand the repair of this hazardous building and allocation for a new academic facility to ensure students' safety.”

Concerned parents and community members also voiced frustration, stating that the building has long posed a risk. In light of Sunday’s accident, they urged immediate action to guarantee a secure learning environment.

In response, Rajapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rahul Chand confirmed that the matter has been brought to the attention of the concerned departments for necessary action.
