Dhaka, July 1 (V7N) — In recognition of the historic role of youth in the July Uprising, the National University has introduced the ‘July Martyr Memorial Scholarship’, aimed at supporting meritorious students from marginalized and disadvantaged backgrounds.
The announcement came during the inauguration of a month-long program marking the anniversary of the July Uprising. Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus officially handed over the first scholarship checks to three students at a ceremony held on Tuesday.
This year, 2,040 students from 725 colleges and institutes affiliated with the National University will receive the one-time financial assistance. The recipients include students with special needs and those from disadvantaged communities, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The scholarship honors the sacrifice of 32 National University students who were martyred during the July Uprising.
The first recipients of the scholarship are:
-
Habiba Akhter, Siddheshwari Girls College
-
S. M. Abu Taleb, Tejgaon Government College
-
Khandaker Mahmudul Hasan, Dhaka Commerce College
Speaking at the event, Education Advisor CR Abrar said, “A year ago, Bangladesh’s youth opened a glorious chapter in the nation’s history. That historic uprising transformed us from disenfranchised subjects into newly entitled citizens.” He emphasized the need to restructure state institutions to ensure that tyranny can never rise again.
CR Abrar added, “For nearly 15 years, particularly over the last decade, the people were deprived of their civil rights. The culture of disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and unlawful detentions weakened the foundations of the state. The July Uprising gave us not just a new nation but a renewed dream. Our youth must now prepare to lead globally.”
The event was also attended by National University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. A. S. M. Amanullah, Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Lutfar Rahman, and Treasurer Professor Dr. A. T. M. Zafrul Azam.
