COX'S BAZAR, June 16, (V7N) – Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the re-excavation work of the historic Patli Canal in Cox's Bazar on Saturday. He arrived at Cox's Bazar Airport on a US-Bangla Airlines flight and began his tour amid heavy rain. Thousands of local residents and party activists gathered around the airport and project area despite the downpour to welcome him.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, the Prime Minister said the historic Patli Canal is not just a reservoir but an important part of the development of Bangladesh's rural economy and irrigation system. He mentioned that the canal excavation program began in 1979 as a continuation of the canal excavation program of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman in 1977, and today it is gaining new importance through re-excavation. He also emphasized preserving canal banks, evicting illegal encroachments, and ensuring sustainable management to protect the environment.

On the same day, the countrywide 250 million tree plantation program was formally launched by planting trees in the Machumghat Reserve Forest. The Prime Minister highlighted that Patli Canal re-excavation and tree plantation are part of the government's broader environmental and rural development initiatives.

The day-long itinerary included visiting the grave of Shaheed Wasim, who was killed in the July uprising, and meeting his family. He later participated in the foundation stone laying of the newly formed Matamuhuri Upazila and offered prayers. He also attended the foundation stone laying ceremony of Pekua Municipality before heading to Chakaria.

In the afternoon, the Prime Minister addressed a public meeting in Chakaria Municipality area as chief guest. Later in the evening, he visited Marine Drive Road and Cox's Bazar sea beach, participated in a public meeting, and exchanged views with people from various professions. He left Cox's Bazar for Dhaka at night, concluding his daylong visit.
