Brahmanbaria, May 09 (V7N) — Two Bangladeshi nationals were killed and two others critically injured after members of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) opened fire at the Kasba border in Brahmanbaria district late Thursday night.
The incident took place around 12:00 am on Friday (May 8) at the Dhajnagar border area under Gopinathpur Union of Kasba upazila.
The deceased were identified as Mursalin, 24, son of Hebju Mia of Batanbari village bordering the Indian state of Tripura, and Nabir Hossain, 30, son of the late Maharam Ali of Madhupur village in the same upazila.
Lieutenant Colonel Sharif, commander of Sultanpur Battalion-60 of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), confirmed the incident.
According to him, a group of youths allegedly entered Indian territory to bring smuggled goods when BSF personnel opened fire on them. Two of the injured were later taken by BSF members to a hospital in Agartala, where they died during treatment. Their bodies are currently at a BSF camp.
The BGB commander said a protest note has already been sent to India’s Border Security Force seeking the return of the bodies, and efforts are underway to hold a flag meeting between the two border forces.
Local residents said BSF members opened fire on several Bangladeshis near the Dhajnagar border during the night. Mursalin and Nabir were critically injured and later taken away by BSF personnel before dying during treatment.
Gopinathpur Union Parishad Chairman Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan said the exact reason behind the firing is still unclear. However, he described the Dhajnagar border as a crime-prone area often used for smuggling activities, including the trafficking of narcotics and other goods from India.
Kasba Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Chamiul Islam said that Mursalin was a college student. He added that local authorities learned the victims had been taken away by BSF personnel after sustaining gunshot injuries.
