APR 18 (V7N) -A Rohingya teenager has died after hanging himself at the Lambashia Rohingya camp in Ukhia, Cox's Bazar. The deceased is Ataur Rahman (15), son of Farid Alam, a resident of Block-D/8 of Ukhia's Lambashia Rohingya Camp-2/East. He died while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Chittagong on Saturday morning, said Ukhia Police Station Officer-in-Charge OC Mujibur Rahman. The incident took place in the Lambashia Rohingya Camp-2/East area of Ukhia on Friday (April 17) afternoon.
According to family sources, Ataur Rahman worked with his father at their tea shop in the camp. On Friday afternoon, his father was outside the shop while Ataur was inside the shop. At around 4:30 pm, his younger brother went to the back room of the shop and found him hanging with a scarf around his neck. Later, family members quickly rescued him and first took him to the NGO-run BDRC Hospital. From there, he was sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for advanced treatment. But as there was no intensive care unit (ICU) there, he was referred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Later, as there was no ICU bed available there, he was admitted to a private hospital in Panchlaish area of Chittagong early on Saturday. While undergoing treatment, the doctor on duty declared him dead at around 8:30 am.
Family members believe that Ataur Rahman, feeling ashamed because of his mother's scolding for his studies, attempted suicide by hanging himself. In this regard, Ukhia Police Station Officer-in-Charge OC Mujibur Rahman said that a Rohingya teenager committed suicide by hanging himself.
