Chattogram, Dec 16 (V7N) – Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner Hasib Aziz has instructed the city’s 16 police station officers to ensure the safety and security of candidates of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) and leaders of anti-discrimination student movements. The directive was issued via a radio broadcast on Sunday night.
The order follows the attempted assassination of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inquilab Mancha and potential parliamentary candidate for Dhaka-8, as well as online and offline threats against him, according to CMP officials.
Addressing the police, Commissioner Aziz stated that security arrangements must be ensured for the movement, residences, offices, party headquarters, and election rallies of NCP and anti-discrimination student leaders. He instructed the police station officers to coordinate directly with the concerned leaders to implement comprehensive security measures.
When asked about specific threats against these leaders, Aziz said, “We do not want to give anyone any opportunity. Threats are coming from both domestic and international fascist and conspiratorial groups, so vigilance and security arrangements are mandatory for the leaders and members of NCP and anti-discrimination student movements.”
Following the attack on Osman Hadi, NCP leaders in Chattogram have expressed concerns over their personal safety. Zobairul Hasan Arif, NCP’s potential parliamentary candidate for Chattogram-8 and central joint chief organizer, said, “After the incident involving Sharif Osman Hadi, we have limited our movement personally and organizationally. We are concerned about security. Although the police have contacted us, we are not fully assured about our safety.”
This directive reflects heightened vigilance ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary elections and ongoing political tensions in the country.
