Faridpur, Aug 15 (V7N) – A violent confrontation broke out at a BNP workers’ rally in Alfadanga, Faridpur on Thursday afternoon, revolving around party nomination politics. Two supporters of Khondaker Nasirul Islam were injured during the scuffle.
The incident occurred around 2:00 PM near the multipurpose hall of the Alfadanga Upazila and in front of the Upazila Health Complex adjacent to the local post office. The rally, organized by the upazila and municipal BNP units, began at 10:00 AM at the multipurpose hall. Khondaker Nasirul Islam, former Member of Parliament for Faridpur-1 and current central vice president of the Krishak Dal, chaired the event. Syed Modarres Ali Isha, district BNP convenor, spoke as the chief guest, and AKM Kibria Swapon, district BNP member secretary, served as special guest.
Two rival aspirants—Khondaker Nasirul Islam and Shamsuddin Mia (also known as Jhunu), a former municipal BNP vice-president—have long been contending for the BNP nomination in Faridpur-1. Similar clashes occurred earlier in August.
Eyewitnesses report that before the chairperson’s speech began, supporters of Shamsuddin Mia chanted “fake” slogans in protest and left the meeting. Afterwards, while Khondaker Nasir was exiting, his supporters continued chants near the health complex, which escalated into a physical altercation. Two of his supporters, Mohsin Alam Chan (35) and Dulu Chowdhury (38), were injured and later treated at the Upazila Health Complex.
Shamsuddin’s supporters, including former deputy municipal BNP secretary Khushbur Rahman, accused the rally organizers of conducting a one-sided event without consulting other factions. He said, “This gathering was held with an AWP (Awami League) or BNM (B-party) tilt, without considering our views.”
Meanwhile, Abdul Mannan Mia, convenor of the suspended upazila BNP committee and a supporter of Khondaker Nasir, blamed “intruders” affiliated with the Awami League and BNM for inciting disorder and targeting Nasir for speaking truthfully. He cautioned that such violent attitudes ahead of elections could damage public perceptions of the party, questioning if the people will be spared from misgovernance if such behavior persists even within political parties.
