Netrokona, Aug 13 (V7N) — The Netrokona district chapter of Bangladesh Press Club, the country’s largest government-registered journalist organization, has strongly condemned the brutal killing of journalist Asaduzzaman Tuhin and demanded swift justice through a fair and impartial investigation.

Tuhin, a Gazipur correspondent for the national daily Protidiner Kagoj, was murdered in a brutal attack around 8:30 PM last Thursday. In response, Bangladesh Press Club Netrokona held a protest and human chain on Tuesday morning at 10:30 AM at the central Shaheed Minar premises in the district town.

The protest was presided over by Shamim Talukder, President of Bangladesh Press Club’s Mymensingh Divisional Committee, and was moderated by Suman Ahmed, Convener of the Barhatta upazila chapter.

Speakers at the event included journalists Asaduzzaman Talukder, Hafizullah Chowdhury Alim (Publicity and Publication Secretary of the district press club), Mohiuddin Talukder (General Secretary of Bangladesh Press Club, Netrokona), Monayem Khan, Sultan Ahmed, and Durjoy. Others who voiced their concerns were Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Jewel, President of the Netrokona branch of the 1990 People’s Uprising's Islamic Warrior Command, Ariful Haque, former JCD Joint General Secretary of Sadar upazila, Mohammad Manik Talukder, Amzad Hossain, and third-gender activist Shamima Akhter.

Speakers collectively demanded exemplary punishment for those involved in the murder, as well as an immediate halt to the growing trend of filing false and harassing cases against journalists across the country.

Mohiuddin Talukder stated, “Journalists are not only being murdered, they’re also being harassed with false lawsuits. We demand an end to these practices and justice for Tuhin’s family.”

Divisional President Shamim Talukder emphasized, “Violence against journalists is rising at an alarming rate. There’s growing concern over the safety of media professionals in Bangladesh. The interim government must take responsibility to ensure an independent and thorough investigation into Tuhin’s killing and other incidents involving attacks or false cases against journalists. We demand the arrest of all suspects involved in the murder and that the charge sheet be submitted within 15 days.”

Participants at the protest urged the authorities to ensure protection for journalists and freedom of the press, calling the rising trend of media-targeted violence a grave threat to democracy.
