Khulna, June 26 (V7N) — Journalists, civil society representatives, and political leaders gathered on Wednesday at the Khulna Press Club to honor the memory of Mamun Reza, the late Bureau Chief of Samakal and Regional Chief Correspondent for Channel 24. Speakers at the memorial and prayer session remembered him as a respected figure in journalism, admired across political lines for his integrity, professionalism, and mentorship.
Mamun Reza passed away recently, leaving behind a deep void in Bangladesh’s journalistic community. The event, organized in his memory, drew a wide array of voices who spoke of his unmatched dedication to objective journalism and his unwavering commitment to social causes.
“Mamun Reza taught young journalists how to rise above political affiliations and report the truth with fairness and accuracy,” one speaker said. “His passing has created a void that can never truly be filled.”
The memorial was presided over by Khulna Press Club Convenor Enamul Haque and moderated by Samakal’s Khulna staff reporter Abul Hasan Himaloy. Among those who paid tribute were political leaders from across the spectrum, including SM Shafiqul Alam Mona and Shafiqul Alam Tuhin of the BNP, Professor Mahfuzur Rahman of Jamaat-e-Islami, and leaders from the Workers Party, Communist Party (CPB), and Islami Andolon.
Prominent civil society members such as former SHUJAN president Professor Anwarul Qadir and Sheikh Ashraf-uz-Zaman, President of the Greater Khulna Development Coordination Committee, also addressed the gathering. Healthcare professionals, including Dr. Baharul Alam, President of BMA Khulna, acknowledged Mamun Reza’s involvement in humanitarian efforts beyond journalism.
“Mamun was more than a journalist — he was a community leader, a social worker, and above all, a human being with a unique sense of empathy,” noted several attendees. “His leadership and sincerity were unparalleled.”
Senior journalists including Ahmad Ali Khan, Sheikh Abu Hasan, SM Habib, Sheikh Didarul Alam (UNB), and Rashidul Islam, a former Vice President of BFUJ, also spoke, along with media union leaders like H.M. Alauddin, Abu Hena Mostafa Jamal Poplu, Mahendranath Sen, and Mohammad Milon.
