Chattogram, July 25 (V7N) – The Bangladesh Coast Guard has arrested 10 alleged smugglers and seized cement and fertiliser worth approximately Tk 14.5 lakh during an operation in the coastal waters of Chattogram’s Sitakunda area while the goods were allegedly being transported for illegal shipment to Myanmar.
Coast Guard Media Officer Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon confirmed the information on Friday (July 24).
He said the Coast Guard Station Bhatyari conducted the operation around 1:00 am near the Sitakunda-Sandwip Channel in Chattogram following suspicions over the movement of two vessels.
During a search of a fishing boat and a cargo boat, Coast Guard personnel recovered 240 sacks of cement and 380 sacks of fertiliser allegedly intended for smuggling to Myanmar.
The authorities also seized the two boats allegedly used in the smuggling operation and detained 10 individuals in connection with the incident.
Lieutenant Commander Sujon said the seized goods, boats and detained suspects have been handed over for further legal action, and the process is currently underway.
