Jessore, July 6 (V7N) – Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) detained two individuals early on Saturday with 23 gold bars weighing 3 kilograms during an anti-smuggling operation in the Muradgarh Bus Stand area of Jessore Sadar. The market value of the seized gold is estimated at Tk 4 crore 57 lakh.
The detainees were identified as Ariful Islam (30), a resident of Salta village in Sharsha upazila, Jessore, and Mehedi Hasan (25) of Jibannagar upazila, Chuadanga.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Saifullah Siddique, commander of BGB's 49th Battalion, a special patrol team conducted the raid based on secret intelligence. During the operation, the two suspects were intercepted and searched. The gold bars were found tightly strapped around their waists using specially designed belts.
In initial questioning, the duo reportedly admitted that they had collected the gold from smugglers in Dhaka’s Sadarghat area and were en route to the Jessore-Moheshpur border with plans to smuggle it into India.
A case has been filed against them, and they have been handed over to Kotwali Police Station in Jessore along with the seized gold for further legal action.
BGB officials noted that this route is increasingly being used for cross-border gold smuggling, with organized networks operating between Dhaka and the India-Bangladesh frontier.
