Teknaf, July 26 (V7N) – The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is causing increasingly rough seas, resulting in severe erosion and flooding along Bangladesh’s coastal belt. Several sections of the Marine Drive in Teknaf and Kuakata have been damaged by powerful waves, while tidal surges continue to inundate low-lying areas, worsening the plight of residents.

On Friday, a 2.5-kilometer stretch of the Marine Drive in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar, was severely eroded by relentless waves, with water breaching the broken dam and flooding surrounding areas. Roads near Anis’s Dale, Tablor Char, and the Kutubdia wind power plant remain underwater. Nearby, low-lying areas in Dhalghata and Matarbari of Maheshkhali have also been flooded.

Similarly, parts of the Marine Drive in Kuakata, Patuakhali, have sustained wave damage. Locals fear that if erosion continues unchecked, the entire Marine Drive may eventually collapse. Residents have urged authorities to take immediate protective measures to safeguard the vital coastal infrastructure.

In Noakhali’s Hatiya area, intermittent rainfall combined with tidal water has caused significant flooding overnight. Several low-lying upazilas, including the district headquarters, are waterlogged, creating hardships for local communities.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a warning for tidal waves of 1 to 3 feet height affecting coastal districts on Saturday. Accordingly, local warning signal number three has been hoisted at the seaports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra as a precautionary measure.

Authorities continue to monitor the evolving weather situation, urging fishermen and coastal residents to exercise caution and follow safety advisories.
