Dhaka, Jun 21 (V7N) – Prime Minister Tarique Rahman departed Dhaka on Sunday afternoon for his first official overseas tour since assuming office, embarking on a six-day visit to Malaysia and China aimed at strengthening economic cooperation, expanding overseas employment opportunities and deepening diplomatic ties.
The Prime Minister left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for Kuala Lumpur at around 3:00 pm on a two-day state visit at the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
During his stay in Malaysia, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to hold official talks with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on Monday. The discussions are expected to focus on reopening and expanding the Malaysian labour market for Bangladeshi workers, Bangladesh's efforts to secure ASEAN membership, the possibility of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), and broader economic cooperation. Several bilateral agreements, including those related to cultural exchanges, are also expected to be signed.
Following the Malaysia visit, the Prime Minister will travel directly to Dalian, China, to attend the 17th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum's "New Champions" (Summer Davos Forum) on Tuesday. The international gathering will bring together global political and business leaders to discuss economic growth, innovation and emerging technologies. During the forum, Tarique Rahman is also expected to meet several world leaders.
On Wednesday, the Prime Minister is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. Bangladesh and China are expected to sign between 15 and 17 bilateral instruments, including 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs), agreements, an action plan and a protocol, covering cooperation in multiple sectors.
The Prime Minister will also meet Chinese President Xi Jinping on June 26 to discuss issues of mutual interest and ways to further strengthen Bangladesh-China relations. Following the conclusion of his China visit, Tarique Rahman is expected to return to Bangladesh on the same day.
The twin visits are widely viewed as significant diplomatic engagements for the new government, with a strong emphasis on attracting foreign investment, expanding employment opportunities abroad and enhancing Bangladesh's strategic partnerships in Asia.
