Dhaka, Jun 03 (V7N) — Speaker of the National Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmed has congratulated Foreign Minister Dr. Khalilur Rahman on being elected President of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The information was disclosed in a press release issued on Tuesday night by Md. Rashed Mizan, Assistant Director (Public Relations-1) of the Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat.
According to the release, Dr. Khalilur Rahman secured victory in the election for the presidency of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, defeating the candidate nominated by Cyprus.
In his congratulatory message, Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed described the election as a proud achievement for Bangladesh and wished the foreign minister success in carrying out his new international responsibilities.
The election marks a significant milestone in Bangladesh’s diplomatic history. Previously, Humayun Rashid Chowdhury, a former foreign minister of Bangladesh, was elected President of the 41st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in 1986.
With Dr. Khalilur Rahman’s election, Bangladesh will hold the presidency of the UN General Assembly for the second time. He is scheduled to assume the role when the 81st session of the Assembly begins later this year.
The development has been widely welcomed by political leaders and government officials, who view it as recognition of Bangladesh’s growing role and credibility in global diplomacy.
