Dhaka, May 15 (V7N) – The BNP-backed Nationalist Lawyers Panel, popularly known as the Blue Panel, secured a landslide victory in the Supreme Court Bar Association elections for the 2026–27 term, winning 13 out of 14 posts including the president and secretary positions.
The election results were announced late Thursday night by senior lawyer Md. Miftah Uddin Chowdhury, convener of the election management sub-committee, following the completion of vote counting. Voting for the two-day election was held on Wednesday and Thursday.
According to the announced results, Blue Panel presidential candidate AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon was elected president with 2,984 votes. His nearest rival, Abdul Baten of the Jamaat-e-Islami-backed Green Panel, received 778 votes.
For the post of secretary, Mohammad Ali of the Blue Panel secured victory with 2,582 votes, while Green Panel candidate AKM Rezaul Karim Khandaker obtained 786 votes.
The Green Panel managed to win only one member post, while the remaining positions went to candidates of the Blue Panel.
The election is being viewed as significant as, for the first time in the history of the association, no Awami League-backed panel participated in the polls. Following a decision taken at the association’s Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on April 26 to ban party-related activities, pro-Awami League lawyers were barred from contesting the election.
As a result, this year’s contest was mainly centered among candidates from the Blue, Green and Red-Green panels.
