Dhaka, Feb 01 (V7N) — Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has urged the rapid initiation of free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations to maintain duty-free access for Bangladesh's largest export market, the European Union (EU).
He stressed that protecting current duty-free access and existing trade benefits in the EU is crucial for Bangladesh's exports in the future.
Dr. Yunus made the remarks during a courtesy call on Nuria Lopez, Chairperson of the European Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh, at the State Guest House Jamuna on Sunday. The meeting was also attended by EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller.
The discussions focused on reforms needed to boost European investment, facilitate bilateral trade, and create a business-friendly environment. The issue of deploying international observers for the upcoming national elections and election monitoring was also discussed.
Dr. Yunus highlighted that the interim government recently concluded an Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) with Japan, guaranteeing duty-free access for over 7,300 Bangladeshi products. He said Bangladesh is preparing to start similar negotiations with other countries, including the European Union, to ensure long-term duty-free access for key products, especially ready-made garments.
