Dhaka, Oct 25 (V7N) — Shafiqul Alam, press secretary to the Chief Advisor, said that Sheikh Hasina has accomplished what her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, could not achieve by establishing Baksal. He also highlighted the challenges faced by English newspapers during the previous authoritarian regime.
He made these remarks at the 21st founding anniversary program of the daily Naya Diganta held at the Shilpakala Academy in the capital on Saturday.
Alam said, “Naya Diganta was one of the strong voices during the fascist era. We faced unspeakable torture, which should have been documented, but it was not.”
He added that under Baksal, all media outlets were compelled to follow a uniform narrative, a control Hasina achieved with her unique approach. He stressed the importance of newspapers in documenting injustice and revolution, noting that during the previous regime, no English newspaper dared to speak against the government, leaving crucial stories of repression untold.
“Protesting is a part of justice, but Hasina made it a crime. It is our moral duty to report these realities,” Alam said.
