Dhaka, Oct 05 (V7N) – Dhaka city is gradually becoming unsuitable for the elderly, with poor road conditions, traffic congestion, and encroachment on sidewalks forcing many seniors to remain housebound. This concern was raised by Planning Advisor Dr. Wahid Uddin Mahmud at a discussion organized by the Bangladesh Senior Citizens Welfare Society on Sunday, marking the World Day of Older Persons.
Dr. Mahmud emphasized that no specific policy has yet been formulated for the elderly in Bangladesh. “Now is the time to develop age-friendly policies and infrastructure,” he said. Highlighting the rising cost of modern treatment, he stressed that caring for the elderly is a social responsibility of the younger generation.
The event was presided over by the Society’s Chairman, Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, who urged that attention must also be paid to the mental health of the elderly. He recommended involving seniors in moral education and community activities, allowing young and old to work together in society and reducing the sense of loneliness among elders.
