New York, Oct 01 (V7N) – Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has urged the international community to exert effective pressure on both the Myanmar government and the Arakan Army to immediately end the persecution of the Rohingya and to begin their swift and safe repatriation to Rakhine State.
Speaking at a UN conference on the situation of Rohingya Muslims and other minorities in Myanmar, held at the UN Headquarters on Tuesday, Dr. Yunus said Bangladesh has been made a victim of the crisis, bearing severe economic, social, and environmental pressure.
“The Rohingya crisis has led to rising challenges, including drug trafficking and cross-border crime. Bangladesh, facing poverty and unemployment, cannot provide employment opportunities for the Rohingya. What is urgently needed is a realistic roadmap for their safe and dignified repatriation, ensuring stability in Rakhine,” he stressed.
The Chief Adviser called on the world to work collectively for a permanent solution, adding that Bangladesh is fully prepared to extend all necessary cooperation.
Yunus’ 7-Point Proposal for a Sustainable Solution
In his speech, Dr. Yunus laid out seven key measures for resolving the crisis:
-
Formulate a realistic roadmap for safe, dignified, and sustainable Rohingya repatriation through stability in Rakhine.
-
Exert effective pressure on the Myanmar government and Arakan Army to stop persecution.
-
Initiate sustainable repatriation efforts, including for newly arrived and internally displaced Rohingya.
-
Ensure international support and civilian presence in Rakhine to guarantee stability.
-
Promote confidence-building measures for Rohingya integration into society and governance.
-
Mobilize donor funding to fully finance the Joint Response Plan.
-
Guarantee accountability and justice, while dismantling the drug economy and suppressing cross-border crime.
“The world must act decisively and in unity to resolve this crisis, for the sake of both the Rohingya people and regional stability,” Yunus concluded.
