Dhaka, Aug 24 (V7N) – The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday (August 24) began hearing claims and objections regarding the delimitation of parliamentary constituencies ahead of the upcoming national election. The hearings started at 12 noon at the Election Building in Dhaka, with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), four election commissioners, and the EC secretary present.

On the opening day, the proceedings saw chaos break out between NCP joint chief organizer Ataullah and the faction led by Rumin Farhana, disrupting the atmosphere inside the hearing room.

According to the schedule, hearings on 18 constituencies in the Comilla region were taken up on the first day:

  • 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm: Brahmanbaria-2, 3, 5

  • 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm: Comilla-6, 9, 10, 11

  • 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm: Noakhali-1, 2, 4, 5; Chandpur-2, 3; Feni-3; Lakshmipur-2, 3

Earlier, the EC had received a total of 1,760 applications seeking changes to the boundaries of 83 constituencies. The highest number came from the Comilla region (683), while the Rangpur region saw the fewest (7).

By constituency, Comilla-1 recorded the single highest number of applications (362). Other constituencies with large numbers of appeals included Pirojpur-1, 2 and 3 (287), Sirajganj-5 and 6 (220), and Dhaka-1 (79).

On July 30, the EC released a draft delimitation of all 300 parliamentary constituencies, aiming to balance voter distribution. Key proposals included:

  • Gazipur: seats increased from 5 to 6

  • Bagerhat: seats reduced from 4 to 3

  • Changes in 39 constituencies, including Panchagarh-1, Rangpur-3, Sirajganj-1 & 2, Satkhira-3 & 4, Shariatpur-2 & 3, several Dhaka city seats, and multiple constituencies in Gazipur, Narayanganj, Sylhet, Brahmanbaria, Comilla, Noakhali, Chittagong, and Bagerhat.

The hearings are expected to continue in the coming days as the Election Commission reviews objections before finalizing the electoral map.
