Dhaka, Aug 04 (V7N) – Finance Advisor Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed said that while many portray the country’s economy negatively, the real picture is far more balanced. He emphasized the need to bring relief to the public through reforms in the revenue system, particularly in income tax, VAT, and customs.

Speaking at a seminar on budgetary revenue activities at the NBR Bhaban on Monday (August 4), he urged critics not to focus only on the shortcomings. “There may be some subtle issues. Don’t just look at the glass as half-empty. There’s a lot we’ve achieved,” he said, cautioning against sliding into what he described as a “fascist” mentality of constant negativity.

In a metaphorical explanation of transparency and governance, Dr. Salehuddin said, “I always say: sunshine is the best antiseptic. No matter how much Sevlon or Dettol you use, doctors know that dressing a wound with just sunlight and air often works better. It heals.”

On the topic of taxpayer services, he admitted difficulties in navigating the online tax return system himself. “I’m over 65. I can send messages and emails, but if I get stuck with anything more technical, it’s a challenge,” he said, urging authorities to further simplify the digital process for elderly and less tech-savvy users.

Other speakers at the seminar echoed his sentiments, stating that the current budget was not only goal-oriented but also aimed at easing the burden on taxpayers. They claimed the tax structure has been simplified and that the focus is on making tax submission more accessible and less prone to harassment.
