Dhaka, Aug 02 (V7N) – The United States has deported 39 Bangladeshi nationals accused of illegally residing in the country. They arrived in Dhaka at 6:45 AM on Saturday aboard a U.S. military aircraft (C-17), which landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The immigration process for the returnees is currently ongoing, according to airport and ministry sources.
A day earlier, the Consular and Welfare Division of Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had issued a statement saying that 61 Bangladeshi citizens were scheduled to be deported. However, only 39 were ultimately repatriated, and officials have not yet clarified the reason for the discrepancy.
This latest deportation is part of a continued crackdown under the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, which has adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward illegal immigration. Since his term began, the U.S. has deported at least 118 Bangladeshis in separate phases, with monthly deportations becoming more routine, according to foreign ministry officials.
Sources indicate that those deported had exhausted all legal avenues to remain in the United States and were detained by U.S. immigration authorities prior to their repatriation. Upon arrival in Bangladesh, returnees are typically subjected to screening and questioning by local law enforcement and immigration officials.
Further updates from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and U.S. Embassy in Dhaka are expected in the coming days.
