Dhaka, Aug 01 (V7N) – Shafiqul Alam, Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh, has expressed relief and optimism following the United States' decision to reduce the reciprocal tariff on Bangladeshi products from 35 percent to 20 percent.

Speaking to Jamuna Television on Friday afternoon, Shafiqul Alam said the agreement with the US on trade tariffs has been successful. “Bangladesh has been given the same conditions as other countries. No special or discriminatory conditions were imposed. The US aimed to reduce its trade deficit, and we responded positively,” he stated.

He also mentioned that Bangladesh plans to import various products from the US, including agricultural goods and cotton, which is expected to create a more balanced trade relationship and boost exports.

Background:
On July 8, US President Donald Trump sent a formal letter to Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, notifying that a 35% tariff would be imposed on Bangladeshi products effective August 1. However, following diplomatic engagement and negotiations, the US reduced the planned tariff to 20%, easing concerns for Bangladeshi exporters.

The Press Secretary noted that Bangladesh’s market performance in the US remains strong, and this decision opens the door to continued growth and improved bilateral trade ties.
